Film experts, archives and museums state highly demanding requirements for automated film analysis. The experimental style of archive film as well as the state of the film material challenge conventional content-based retrieval techniques. In this talk, we discuss the special requirements for content-based retrieval in the domain of archive film and present retrieval techniques that have been developed based on these requirements. Experimental results show that the presented methods bear the potential to improve the understanding, handling, and access of archive film material.
